Future Production has successfully delivered and installed a Top Entry Wireline System (TEWS) on an 8th Generation Drillship in Q1 2023.
The client required a non-rental, tailor-made solution that combined lighter weight, enhanced safety features, and improved functionality compared to traditional systems.
This project demonstrates Future Production’s continued focus on innovation and operational efficiency for modern drilling rigs.
Compact, Lightweight, and Feature-Rich Design
Traditional wireline systems are typically heavy and cumbersome, often complicating installation and operation. In contrast, the Future Production TEWS is smaller, lighter, and designed for flexibility, while meeting all relevant dropped object prevention, lifting, and inspection standards.
Key features include:
-
Dropped object prevention mechanisms and built-in lifting compliance.
-
Compatibility with TDX-1500 & TDX-1250 top drives.
-
Compact design that reduces system volume and simplifies handling.
-
Integrated functions that standard wireline units usually lack.
The unit supports multiple wireline sizes (3/16” – ½”), with corresponding wire cutters and a bleed-off function to safely release trapped pressure under the packer — improving both safety and operational reliability.

Collaboration that Drives Innovation
The TEWS project was developed in close collaboration between Future Production and the client, combining extensive offshore operational experience with Future Production’s engineering expertise.
By addressing real-world rig challenges, traditional limitations were removed, resulting in a solution that is efficient, flexible, and operator-friendly.
Key performance benefits:
-
Short rig-up time.
-
Lightweight construction for easy handling.
-
Roller design replacing large entry sheaves for reduced size and weight.
-
Flexible packer and roller groove inserts allowing for multiple wireline diameters (3/16”–½”).
Tailored to Client Needs
The client sought a custom “non-rental” wireline system with improved performance for their 8th Generation rig, which has been in successful operation since mid-2023. Future Production’s established partnership with the operator enabled rapid design, delivery, and integration. You can read more about that here and here.
The system was developed as a drop-in solution, requiring minimal training and no modifications to existing proprietary equipment onboard — a hallmark of Future Production’s fit-for-purpose engineering.

Summary
While standard wireline systems may suit certain operations, bespoke solutions like the Future Production TEWS deliver measurable advantages in efficiency, HSE, and Non-Productive Time (NPT) reduction.
The modest cost increase compared to off-the-shelf units is offset by significantly improved return on investment (ROI).
With decades of experience in offshore equipment design, Future Production continues to demonstrate that tailored engineering is key to safer and more efficient rig operations.
