The FP CombiCat® –  Skiddable and Mobile Horizontal Pipe Handling System

By Aris Hegg
April 17, 2024

Future Production is proud to have delivered the innovative and highly capable horizontal pipe handling system  FP CombiCat® for a Well Intervention and Plug & Abandonment (P&A) operative vessel. The FP CombiCat® is a 100% hands-free operated system which combines pipe handling crane, catwalk machine, stabbing and guide arm, all in one complete unit.

Delivered in 2017, the system remains a benchmark in offshore safety and efficiency, with continuous operation confirming its long-term reliability and performance.

Compact, Skiddable, and Highly Functional

The CombiCat® was designed to simplify rig-up, operation, and relocation while maintaining a high level of automation and safety. It features an automatic yoke leveling system, operating both vertically and horizontally, controlled directly from the driller’s cabin or via wireless radio control, enabling smooth, precise, and safe operations.

Key integrated functionalities:

  • Pipe handling crane

  • Catwalk machine

  • Stabbing and guide arm

This modular, all-in-one configuration eliminates the need for multiple standalone systems, dramatically reducing installation time and complexity. The complete unit can be lifted into position, hinged onto the drill floor, and bolted down at the rear end of the pipe deck within minimal time.

Designed for Flexibility and Mobility

To enable rapid installation and relocation, the FP CombiCat® is equipped with one hydraulic and one electrical connection, located conveniently beneath the catwalk near the drill floor. For enhanced mobility, optional quick-connect plugs can be supplied based on client requirements.

When deck space is needed for other purposes, the CombiCat® can easily be lifted and stored temporarily using the rig crane — a unique advantage for offshore units where deck space is at a premium.

Tailored to Unique Operational Needs

Developed in close collaboration with the client, the FP CombiCat® was engineered to meet specific operational challenges for well intervention and P&A operations.

Distinct advantages include:

  • Short rig-up and rig-down time.

  • Lightweight and easy to handle.

  • Compact footprint with multiple integrated functions.

  • Efficient use of limited rig deck space.

  • High degree of mechanization and flexibility.

This combination of mobility, safety, and efficiency makes CombiCat® an ideal solution for operators seeking improved control and reduced Non-Productive Time (NPT).

Summary

The FP CombiCat® exemplifies Future Production’s approach to fit-for-purpose innovation — delivering a system that improves HSE, reduces NPT, and optimizes deck utilization.

Its robust, modular construction and hands-free operation make it an excellent long-term investment for well intervention and lift-boat operations — combining safety, mobility, and efficiency in one compact package.
